files.fm Downloader beta: a more stable way to download large Files.fm shares

files.fm Downloader beta is a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux that helps users download large Files.fm shares more reliably.

Large shared folders are not always comfortable to download as one big ZIP stream. If the connection drops, the browser closes, or the computer goes to sleep, the whole download can fail and the user may need to start again.

files.fm Downloader uses a different approach. Instead of asking the server to stream one huge ZIP archive, the app reads the shared file tree and downloads the files one by one. This makes big downloads easier to pause, resume, check, and recover.

Beta note: the app is currently in beta and still being tested, but it is open for users who want to try it.

Why use files.fm Downloader?

When a Files.fm shared folder contains many files or very large files, downloading everything as a ZIP stream can be fragile. A single interrupted stream may mean the whole download has to be repeated.

files.fm Downloader uses a stable file-by-file method:

  • it reads the folder structure;
  • creates the same folders on your computer;
  • downloads each file separately;
  • shows progress for the whole download and for each active file;
  • can pause and resume downloads;
  • can continue unfinished files from saved partial data when the server supports it.

This is especially useful for large photo galleries, video folders, project archives, backups, client deliveries, and other big shared folders.

Download files.fm Downloader beta

Choose the version for your operating system:

macOS

On macOS, if the app is blocked because it is a new beta app, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and choose Open Anyway.

macOS Privacy and Security Open Anyway setting

Windows

Linux

All current beta builds are also available in one Files.fm folder: open the files.fm Downloader beta download folder.

How it works

  1. Paste a Files.fm or Failiem.lv shared folder or file link.
  2. Choose the folder where files should be saved.
  3. Press Start download.
  4. The app reads the shared file tree.
  5. Files are downloaded one by one by default, or in parallel if enabled.
  6. You can pause and resume the download when needed.

If the app is closed during a download, it saves the current download session. When opened again, it can restore the link, save folder, file tree, and unfinished progress.

Built for large and unstable downloads

files.fm Downloader is designed to help when downloads take time:

  • pause downloads manually;
  • resume after an interrupted connection;
  • continue from partial files when possible;
  • skip files that were already downloaded completely;
  • redownload broken or incomplete files safely;
  • keep the computer awake while downloading;
  • show speed and estimated time left;
  • show status for every file and folder.

This makes it easier to download large shares over slower or less stable connections.

Password, paid, and private links

If a shared link needs a password, the app asks for it in a small password window. The password is used only for that link attempt and is not saved in Settings.

If files are paid content, the app marks them as Buy required and shows the buy link instead of retrying the download.

If a link is private and accessible only by email permission, the app explains that the user must log in to Files.fm with the email address where the link was shared.

Settings for control

The app includes simple settings:

  • Light or Dark mode;
  • speed limit in MB/s;
  • optional parallel downloads;
  • retry count;
  • skip existing files;
  • create a top-level folder;
  • notification when done;
  • sound when done;
  • log file location for troubleshooting.

Parallel downloads are disabled by default. When enabled, the default is 4 parallel downloads, and the maximum is 12. Settings are saved and loaded when the app opens again.

Download history

Completed downloads are saved in Download history. From history, users can:

  • open the original Files.fm link;
  • open the saved folder on the computer;
  • see file count and total size;
  • avoid accidentally downloading the same project again.

If the saved folder is removed from the computer, the app removes that project from history on startup.

Beta status

files.fm Downloader is still in beta. It is being tested with different Files.fm shared links, large folders, password-protected folders, paid content, connection problems, and restart/resume scenarios.

The app is open for users to try now, especially for large Files.fm shares where downloading file by file is more stable than one big ZIP stream.

Feedback is welcome while the app continues to improve.
